In addition to the structure sub specialty training opportunities trainee can apply for out of programme time in either research, additional training experience which fall out with the core EM training programme.

Further details of eligibility and how to apply can be found on the Scottish Deanery website.

We are keen to support trainees undertaking a wide variety of out of programme opportunities. These can great enhance and enrich a trainees knowledge, skills and expertises. They will hopefully lead to more fulfilling and successful careers in the future.

Over the past few years we have been able to support EM trainees in a range of areas. These have included Medical Education, Global Health, Mental Health, Toxicology and Acute Medicine. We are receptive to new ideas and proposals and would do our best to accommodate trainees pursuing and developing their own interests alongside their training in Emergency Medicine.

Trainees should be aware that they need to discuss any out of programme wishes well in advance of starting any post. Discussion needs to happen between their educational supervisor and training programme director as early as possible and with at least 6 to 12 months notice. Any application needs to be submitted 6 months in advance of the OOP activity starting.
