Information about the site Education Coordinators and the full induction programme for the week commencing 24 July 2023.

The Medical Education Directorate are a team of consultants, trainees and administrative staff employed to maximise your learning, potential and progress as a doctor in training. Each of the major sites has a dedicated Educational Coordinator (see below) who will be your point of contact through the induction process and your first few jobs.

Induction Programme 2023

Monday 24 July

Home Site welcome by the Associate Director of Medical Education (ADME) and the Education Coordinators

Welcome to your first day of Induction, where you will meet the ADME and Education Coordinators and given the opportunity to obtain your ID badges for your site. This will also be the time where you are provided with useful paperwork including network access, details for Trak training (our Electronic Patient Record system), and your new NHS Lothian emails. (PLEASE REMEMBER THAT INFORMATION GOVERNANCE AND HEPMA LEARNPRO MODULES MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOUR ACCESS DETAILS WILL BE GIVEN).

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to catch up on any Mandatory Learnpro modules and other eLearning which you still need to complete.

Tuesday 25 July

Welcome by the Medical Director and Director of Medical Education

8:30am to 9am - You will be welcomed to the site of your first rotation in the morning by Simon Edgar (DME) and Tracey Gillies (MD for RIE).

Deanery Induction at Chancellors Building, Royal Infirmary, Little France

9am to midday - There will be an induction by the South East Scotland Deanery, along with information on Turas / ePortfolio, Wellbeing and FY1/FY2 clinical experiences.

Lunch will be provided

In the afternoon there will be a series of Clinical talks as follows:

1pm to 1:25pm - Prescribing Anti-coagulants Safely

1:25pm to 2pm - Diabetes in Hospital Inpatients

2pm to 2:25pm - IV Fluids

2:25pm to 2:45pm - BREAK

2:45pm to 3:10pm - Antimicrobial Stewardship

3:15pm to 3:40pm - Patient Safety

3:45pm to 4:10pm - Caring for the Dying Patient

4:10pm to 4:30pm - Treatment Escalation Plans

Wednesday 26 July to Friday 28 July

You will have been provided with an individual programme of practical clinical workshops, modules and training during these days. These sessions will take place both morning and afternoon. The Clinical Skills Sessions will include venepuncture, cannulation and catheterisation.

  • Simulation and Immediate Life Support - you will be allocated a site to attend which may not be your home site

  • Clinical Workshops will take place in the Medical Education Centre in the Western General Hospital

  • TRAK and HEPMA training - you will be allocated a site to attend which may not be your home site

  • Mandatory eLearning can take place on site or at home

  • You can also use this time to carry out the Active Bystander training (Sessions to be confirmed) as well as having a look at the MED website to view the resources available to you.

Friday 28 July, 7:30pm until late

Social Networking Event at Brewhemia, Market Street, Edinburgh (behind Waverley Train Station)

After an exhausting week of talks, workshops and eLearning, come and join the MED team for a social event where you will have the opportunity to meet with your peers in a non-clinical environmnent. We will be in the Bothy and Boudoir Suites on the first floor.

Thanks to sponsorship from the BMA, MDU, Learnpro and Trickle to name a few, we will be providing a canape style buffet for you to enjoy.

No sign up needed, just turn up on the night.

Monday 31 July and Tuesday 1 August

You will all be shadowing in the wards at your home site.

Wednesday 2 August

First day of doctoring!

This is the general changeover day for all doctors in training.

You may attend site specific inductions if you have not worked in NHS Lothian within the last 2 years.

Ongoing FY Teaching

Don't forget you will have ongoing weekly teaching throughout FY1. This is run at protected lunchtime sessions:

  • RIE - Tuesday 12:30pm to 1:30pm

  • SJH - Wednesday 1pm to 2pm

  • WGH - Thursday 12:30pm to 1:30pm

RCPE Top tips for FY1 Online Event

The RCPE Trainees and Members’ Committee has organised an evening meeting aimed specifically at medical graduates who will be starting their first hospital job in August. Our ‘Top Tips for New Doctors’ Evening Medical Update is designed to provide delegates with tips and advice for their first year as a new doctor. The Update is taking place on Tuesday 25 July 2023 and will be available to view live online from home or live from a participating live-link site. This event is free to attend and features four speakers with a personal knowledge of this important milestone in becoming a doctor. The programme for the evening is on the attached document.
