Supporting a Trainee who is an International Medical Graduate

Resources

We continue to welcome and benefit from growing diversity in our workplace but acknowledge the unique challenges that IMGs may face. While many IMGS settle well into their roles, working in a new system, with new dialects and cultures can be isolating, especially when there are new skills to learn. These resources have been developed to help you support a trainee who is an International Medical Graduate.

We have a lot of information for trainees on our IMG pages

GMC - "Welcome to UK Practice"

This is a free workshop designed to support doctors new to the UK. It includes practical advice, ethical scenarios while applying key standards and GMC guidance. This should be for doctors who gained their primary medical qualification outside of the UK and registered with a licence to practise within the last 12 months.

Learning how the NHS compares to healthcare systems of other countries can help you to understand the adjustment in expectations required when someone has trained or worked outside of the UK.

This document from the Kings Fund compares healthcare and different cultures to the NHS.

This document is 120 pages but the key messages and conclusions are short.
