IMG Trainer resources
Supporting and nurturing IMG colleagues at the start of their NHS career, and providing appropriate ongoing support, enables IMGs to thrive and be retained in Scotland.
To support you as managers/supervisors, and your new team members, we wanted to remind you of some resources available on the CWS Medical Workforce Turas Hub and to let you know of some exciting new developments to look out for in the next few months.
The International Medical Graduates NHS Guide supports and signposts doctors to the induction and pastoral support available to help them settle into their new role, and new country.
Welcoming International Medical Graduates – NHS Managers Guide can assist managers and supervisors in providing a robust induction, and ongoing pastoral support for any new IMGs joining the workforce.
The NHS Scotland National Standards for Induction of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) developed by the ‘Scottish Regions IMG Support Group’ (SING) should also be used to ensure you have a comprehensive plan to welcome your new IMG colleagues, and to ensure you provide appropriate ongoing support to them throughout their time in NHS Scotland.
The Guide for Managers supporting Internationally Educated Colleagues complements the cultural humility training developed by the NHS Scotland Academy, and provides best practice, and top tips to enable teams to be prepared to welcome new international colleagues.
New IMG Workforce Hub – coming soon!
We also wanted to let you know that a new dedicated workforce resources hub for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) is under development and will launch on Turas Learn in October 2025. Designed to support IMGs, their supervisors, and managers, as well as Health Boards and GP Practices, the hub brings together key national resources alongside signposting to board-specific materials and induction/ongoing support programmes.
The hub will provide an opportunity to bring together the wealth of support available for IMGs in Scotland from Health Boards, GP Practices, the GMC, medical defence unions, and Royal Colleges, into a single location online. The hub will also offer an opportunity for organisations to share good practice, enabling a culture of continuous improvement so that all IMG doctors, at all grades, in all specialities, training and locally employed, will all feel equally welcomed and valued for the skills and experience they have chosen to bring to Scotland.
If you would like to contribute content to the IMG hub from your organisation, please contact cws.nes@nhs.scot and look out for updates on the CWS Medical Workforce Turas Hub
