Becoming a Trainer
Thank you for applying to become a Trainer in NHS Lothian. We are very proud of the clinical training that takes place across all our sites and services. None of this would be possible without an engaged faculty of trainers and we are delighted that you will be joining us.
Across NHS Lothian, staff contribute to the training of our PG and UG doctors. We are pleased to host resources across this website to support that. This section is specifically for those who choose to take a GMC recognised role. For postgraduate education those roles are named Clinical Supervisor (CS) and named Educational Supervisor (ES).
Before applying for recognition of trainer you should have discussed it with your Clinical Director, who will ensure you have job planned time for the role, and your local Training Programme Director or Foundation Programme Director, who will ensure you are supported and developed in the role. Job descriptors can be found in the document section below.
To apply for recognition of trainer you should have:
Agreement from your CD and TPD with job planned time for the role
Current Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training e.g., TURAS Learn module
Evidence to support training in relevant GMC Domains (CS Domains 1-4 and 7; ES Domain 1-7)
Evidence to support training across GMC Domains
You can evidence training across domains in many ways. When you start out the simplest way to do this is by completing either the MIAD course; the Clinical Educator Programme or one of the NES Trainer Collaborative courses for new trainers. Both support full training for the role, though their content and timeframes are slightly different. The decision on which course to take should be determined by your personal developmental needs and practically which fits best with your work commitments. To help your decision-making this document compares the options in more detail.
Details of other sources of evidence for each domain can be found in the tabs below.
Once you have completed the 3 steps above you can start the process of recognition:
Email Loth.RoT@nhs.scot and request an Initial Recognition of Trainer form
Complete and return the form, with your evidence of training, to Loth.RoT@nhs.scot
Sit back, relax and wait for the process* to run through
*The process- the MED RoT team work with NES to add you to the list of recognised trainers. TURAS will be updated first, which will allow you to start supervising trainees. NES forward your details to the GMC who update the medical register (this can take longer). Your SOAR account will update so you have an additional section to record your ongoing RoT activities and CPD. Support for appraisal can be found here.
