There are a range of medical grades on the ward doctor rota including Foundation Doctors, GP and Internal Medicine Trainees.

FY1 – Inpatient wards attached to the GI oncology team

FY2/IMT/GPSTs - Your time will be split between inpatient wards, admissions unit and out of hours shifts including nights as part of the Hospital at Night team covering both oncology and haematology inpatients. Inpatient work is ward based:

  • Team A – Wards 3, 6 and boarders on ward 71

  • Team B – Ward 11 & 15

The speciality registrars are either trainees in clinical or medical oncology, and rotate between teams every 4 months. Their time is split between ward and outpatients.

Consultant ward rounds happen on a regular schedule which is displayed on the wards and available in the departmental shared drive. On days without regularly scheduled rounds, ward doctors should see all their patients and alert senior staff to any new or unwell patients to be reviewed. When trying to get in touch with a patient's consultant or registrar for non-urgent advice it is often quickest and easiest to e-mail them using an nhs lothian email address.

There are three trainee advanced nurse practitioners currently working in the department, splitting their time between wards and CAU:

  • Blair Smith

  • Alyson Love

  • Claire Rodger

There are several Clinical Fellow posts (post FY2) who divide their time between projects, clinic, ward cover and out of hours work.
