About St John's

St John’s is a modern teaching hospital providing a comprehensive and expanding range of services for the people of Lothian and beyond.

The hospital, based at Howden in Livingston, has a 24 hour Accident & Emergency department. St John’s has a reputation for excellence in maternity services - around 2,500 babies are born at the hospital every year. There is a paediatric service at the hospital, including an acute receiving unit, special baby unit, paediatric ward and a range of outpatient services.

We are proud to have a specialist head and neck unit, as well as specialist burns and plastic surgery unit. We are a regional centre for elective surgery, including minimally invasive surgery. As part of NHS Lothian’s University Hospitals Division, we are home to the Short Stay Elective Surgical Centre, treating around 3,000 patients a year from across Lothian for day surgery.
