How to develop your knowledge and skills as an educator.

Options for faculty development

To support you in your role as an educator, we need to ensure that you have opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills. We recognise that it can be hard to access educational opportunities when you are working in busy clinical environments. Therefore, we offer a range of options that you can choose from based on your workload and schedule. These range from simple guides to various aspects of medical education to the flagship faculty development offering, the Clinical Educator Programme (CEP). Click on the links below to explore these options further.

  1. Top tips for educators – These simple guides have been produced in collaboration with CEP to provide evidence-based suggestions on how best to support learners during common situations in education and training. They are designed to be quick to access and read through, so that you can perform in line with best practice no matter what educational situation you find yourself in.

  2. ‘Training to Teach’ - The Clinical Development Programme – This largely self-directed programme provides a framework to help you develop your practice as an educator. Through a combination of self-directed learning activities, delivery of teaching, gathering of feedback, and reflection on your practice, you can work through the three levels of the programme. As you progress, you gain access to a mentor from the Medical Education Directorate to support your development further. 3. The Clinical Educator Programme (CEP) - CEP offers a suite of clinical education courses that are designed to develop the teaching skills of clinicians and academics who teach University of Edinburgh medical students and postgraduate medical trainees in Southeast Scotland. CEP offer six educational courses, each one comprising of a combination of online learning and a workshop. Workshops can be either online or in person. You can complete the whole programme or select the courses most relevant to you. For more information on CEP, including the courses available, click here
